Alf Pryor
Growing up here and spending the summers fishing, Alf finds that Kodiak is where the material is. He says, “When the fishing is slow I just take pictures.”
Since receiving his first camera, an old Polaroid, at age four, Alf has had a passion for taking photos. He has a degree in journalism, but admits to having spent most of his time in the art department. His background in graphics, computers, and photo shop is very useful in creating his art work.
Finding film too expensive, Alf has gone completely digital. Alf carefully balances his images on the computer, calling computers the “modern darkroom.” He blends together multiple images, often layering as many as ten photographs to complete one image. Alf believes that if he has an image that is compositionally solid, it does not matter how the image was created. Alf controls the entire production of his work, from shooting the images, manipulating, and printing them on a variety of papers to achieve different results.
The purpose in creating his work is personal. He creates photos to hang on his family and friends walls. Alf is surrounded by artistic family members. He states, “They never really called it art, it’s just what everybody did.” It’s fun for him to be back in Kodiak and showing his current work to family and friends. The positive and enthusiastic responses inspire him to keep creating.
